A full hybrid pairs a petrol engine with a small battery and electric motor that recovers braking energy — no charging cable needed, and noticeably lower urban fuel consumption as a result. Hybrid-electric cars were the most popular powertrain choice in the EU in 2025, accounting for around 34% of new registrations. We have tested more than 20 hybrid models on mixed urban and motorway routes, focusing on real-world consumption, refinement, and how smoothly each system switches between petrol and electric drive.
