The latest addition to Volvo’s Cross Country range, the V60 CC, was launched in late 2018.

In terms of appearance, the changes are relatively minor compared to the standard V60. The raised ground clearance, slightly larger tyres, and plastic body skirts and fenders create an off-road feel.

The guy on the shabby cottage road

Volvo’s Cross Country models are clearly designed with Scandinavian cottaging and boating in mind. The V60 CC has a total ground clearance of just over 207 mm, an increase of 75 mm over the standard V60.

The ground clearance is already sufficient to allow the car to be driven well on the slightly less well-maintained cottage road. It’s also worth noting that the XC60 has only 9 mm more ground clearance.

The V60 CC always comes with four-wheel drive (Borgwarner) as standard, which transfers a maximum of 50% of the power to the rear wheels.

On dry spring roads, there was little opportunity to test the all-wheel drive system, but off-road, at low speeds and on a steep road in poor condition, the all-wheel drive system did its job perfectly. On straight and dry roads, the car is almost entirely front-wheel drive.

In addition to four-wheel drive, the car always comes standard with a downforce damper and Off-Road driving mode.

We were able to test the function of the downshift on a steep and uneven gravel surface. The car brakes decisively on the wheels required to provide the necessary grip.

The low-brake system allows a maximum speed of about 10 km/h. If you really want to drive the car slowly down a really bad downhill slope surrounded by rocks or other obstacles, you should reduce the speed by at least half.

Unfortunately, the maximum speed of the downhill braking system cannot be adjusted downwards, even though there is clearly a need for it in the tightest places.

Driving on rough roads is helped by the larger tyres than the standard V60. The test car’s 215/55/18 tyres are just under 4 centimetres larger in diameter on the CC model than on the standard V60.

The larger tyres add stability to the ride, but the larger size is also particularly noticeable in the car’s side profile. The tyres better fill the already padded fenders, adding to the off-road look typical of the Cross Country model.

Volvo’s strong performance

Volvo has succeeded in creating the safe and easy driving comfort that is characteristic of Volvo in the new models, but at the same time it has also managed to invest in emotionality when it comes to the chassis and steering. The V60 CC is no exception.

The V60 CC is built on a SPA platform, like the other 60 and 90 Series Volvos. In terms of driving performance, the car is very close to the other models. Compared to the standard V60, the raised chassis and larger tyres add stability and the car feels bigger to drive.

The ride is stable, decisive and, like a Volvo, unpredictable. In the case of the Cross Country, the higher centre of gravity is not noticeable on twisty roads, and the chassis does its job with aplomb.

Inside, the V60 CC is almost identical to the other models and brings nothing new or surprising to those who have driven other new Volvo models. The seats are supportive and keep the driver snug in the seat. The white leather seats in the test car add a touch of luxury to the interior.

The V60 CC is available with two engine options. In addition to the D4 engine in the test car, a 250 hp T5 petrol engine is available.
