Ford Mustang Mach-e – a naming mistake?

The all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-e hides under its legendary brand name a great package of good driveability, quite energy-efficient electricity consumption while driving and above all a completely new concept and direction in Mustang history.

But whether or not this is the real Mustang is a matter of opinion.

The Mustang Mach-e is currently available in Finland with two different powertrains and two battery sizes.

The rear-wheel drive model comes in 269 and 294 hp models with a maximum torque of 430 Nm. The four-wheel drive models have 269 and 351 hp respectively, with a maximum torque of 580 Nm. A more powerful GT model will be added to the range at a later date.

Depending on the model, the car will have an unladen weight of just over 2,000 kg, which, combined with a low centre of gravity and a comfortable, compact chassis, will provide a sporty driving experience – a combination of the comfort of an American car and the sporty stiffness of a Mustang.

The battery sizes currently available are 75 kWh and 98 kWh. Depending on the power train, Ford promises a range of 400-440 kilometres on a single charge for the smaller battery and 540-610 kilometres for the larger Extended Range battery.

Actual consumption during the test drive was a positive surprise. The 540 kilometres promised by Ford in the test car is well within the range of a normal mixed drive. At best, the average consumption figures on the longer test drive were in the region of 15 kWh/100 km.

With the consumption tested and the 88 kWh battery capacity available, this would theoretically allow a range of up to 580 kilometres. The average consumption for just under 2000 km was 22.0 kWh/100 km.

The interior of the car is dark and airy, and the main distracting factor was the combination of different materials, which reduces the impression of quality. The materials themselves feel of reasonable quality.

The FordPass app brings the car’s functions to your mobile phone, allowing you to access car features and customize settings before delivery, plan long trips with charging points in mind, and manage charging and interior temperature, among other things. The app also acts as a key to the car and access to the car in case the right key is lost.

Overall, Ford has done a commendable job with Mach-e. A little stiffness and slowness is present in the usability of the touchscreens, but otherwise the Mustang Mach-e offers a pleasant electric car experience. The personalised and rounded shape of the exterior may divide opinion for and against.
